What is a fiduciary?

Audience: For Employees

We know finance jargon can be intimidating. We want to empower non-experts to talk more comfortably about money. So, we’re defining common finance terms. One term worth knowing is fiduciary.

As a noun, a fiduciary is a trusted entity. In the investment industry, a fiduciary is a person or institution that has a legal duty to manage its clients’ money wholly in their clients’ best interest.

As an adjective, fiduciary describes the trusted relationship between a client or beneficiary and the entity they entrust to manage their assets.

Why this term is important: When you invest with Just Futures or another registered investment advisory firm, you are trusting us to make investment decisions that are in your best financial interest. That’s why, when we consider which funds to include in our investment portfolio models, our first set of criteria consists of metrics like financial return, risk-adjusted return, cost, and how independent assessors, such as Broadridge, rank funds relative to each other. In this way, we hope to help you secure your financial future and, eventually, enjoy a dignified retirement.

Not everyone who provides investment advice is a fiduciary. If you ask someone, “Are you a fiduciary?” any answer other than “yes” should give you pause.

Curious about more financial terms? To help demystify the financial industry, we’ve published a glossary.

If you don’t have a retirement investing account, or if your employer contracts with a different retirement plan provider, we’d love to show you Just Futures’ services! Contact us: info@justfutures.com.
