Steve Choi is currently a consultant focusing on advocacy, organizational change and leadership development.
Steve has spent the last 20 years as a nonprofit executive, lawyer, social entrepreneur and organizer, serving in leadership at social justice and movement organizations. He served as the Executive Director of the New York Immigration Coalition from June 2013 to September 2020, the nation’s largest state immigrant rights coalition with more than 200 organizational members. As the ED, Steve quintupled the size of the organization’s budget and grew its staff from 15 to 55, and served as New York State’s chief advocate on immigrant rights on the Federal, state and local levels – leading the NYIC to win historic immigrant rights victories in New York City, state and on the Federal level. Steve has built numerous state-wide coalitions consisting of hundreds of different organizations, giving him a deep understanding of the challenges that diverse nonprofits face. He currently serves as a passive investor in Just Futures, and is excited to support its growth and success.
Steve has served as an executive coach to different Executive Directors around management, governance and sustainability efforts; he is also an experienced Board member for nonprofits such as the United Way of New York City, philanthropic institutions such as the Scherman Foundation, and government agencies such as the NYC Human Rights Commission. Steve received a J.D. from Harvard Law School, a M.A. from the University of Hawai’i, and a B.A. from Stanford University in History with Honors. He lives in Queens with his wife and three children.
