How CDFIs Support Community and Advance Just Transition
CDFI Series Part 5 of 9
Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) are anchor institutions for advancing equity and building regenerative local economies in communities that conventional banks routinely overlook. By blending specialized lending with hands-on technical support—what the sector calls “capital plus”—CDFIs expand opportunity for small businesses, increase affordable housing, and foster financial empowerment. For entrepreneurs, especially those in low-wealth or BIPOC communities, CDFIs are uniquely positioned to provide loans tailored to individual circumstances and offer coaching or mentorship to help business owners launch and sustain operations, often lending where traditional banks only see risk. This approach has catalyzed countless businesses—from mobile vendors to cooperative ventures—while keeping charge-off rates below 1%.
In housing, CDFIs play a transformative role by structuring flexible financing solutions for developers and homebuyers in communities experiencing historic underinvestment. Initiatives like Enterprise Community Partners’ “Equitable Path Forward” combine patient capital with technical assistance to diversify leadership in real estate and expand the supply of stable, affordable homes.
CDFIs also excel at meeting unique community needs, such as supporting financial stability for Native households through culturally attuned lending and education. Organizations like Native American Community Development Corporation Financial Services deliver one-on-one coaching, credit-building loans, and specialized mortgage products that account for tribal land complexities, thereby enabling financial independence and prosperity within Native communities.
